Illinois State Fairgrounds Recap: Patrick
Sheltra was in familiar territory last weekend at the Illinois
State Fairgrounds (Springfield) and it showed. Sheltra making
his third start at the Springfield, Illinois dirt track
qualified an impressive fourth and rallied from a gas-only
stop to hold off a pack of hungry voulchers to cross the
start-finish line third tying the his previous best effort
in the Allen Crowe 100 in 2007. Sheltra’s performance
was his fourth top-five effort of the year.
Welcome Back To The Windy City: Patrick
Sheltra returns to the Windy City looking to make his fourth
career start at the Chicagoland Speedway. Sheltra is in
search of collecting his first career top-10 finish at the
aggressive cookie-cutter track. Chicagoland Speedway holds
the spot of Sheltra’s inaugural ARCA RE/MAX Series
debut in 2005 driving a second entry for Clements Racing.
After qualifying an impressive 21st, clutch problems sidelined
Sheltra. His best finish in three previous starts at Chicagoland
Speedway was 13th in 2007.

team for the 15th event on the 2009 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule,
Sheltra Motorsports participated in the open ARCA RE/MAX
Series test at Chicagoland Speedway last Wednesday. Sheltra’s
driving coach and 2005 NASCAR Camping World Truck Series
(NCWTS) Champion Ted Musgrave also spent some time at the
wheel looking to dial in the No. 60 Buffalo Wings &
Rings Dodge Charger with the intentions of soaring the third-year
ARCA team to victory lane for the second time this season.
The Coach Still Coaching: Former NASCAR
Camping World Truck Series Champion Ted Musgrave will continue
to serve as the driving coach for the 23-year old Sheltra
this weekend and the remainder of the 2009 racing season.
Musgrave, a native of Franklin, Wisconsin has over 18 years
of experience combined between the NASCAR Camping World
Truck Series (NCWTS), NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS) and
NASCAR Sprint Cup Series (NSCS).
NASCAR Nationwide Series Plans To Be Announced
Soon: Sheltra Motorsports will announce their plans
for the remainder of the 2009 NASCAR Nationwide Series (NNS)
season in the near future. Sheltra made his third career
NNS start and first of the season last month at Daytona
International Speedway driving the No. 81 D.H. Griffin-Quality
Turf Dodge Charger for MacDonald Motorsports.
Watcha Haulin?: Crew Chief John Hayden
has elected to use Sheltra Motorsports Chassis No. 13 this
weekend at Chicagoland Speedway. This is the same piece
the team raced to a sixth and ninth place finish at Kentucky
Speedway this year. This car has also had track time at
Michigan International Speedway, Nashville Superspeedway
and Chicagoland Speedway last season. The former Penske
Racing ride has four top-10 finishes including a best of
sixth at Michigan (2008) and Kentucky (2009) in five starts.
It will be run for just the sixth time in Sheltra’s
career. Chassis number 16 will serve as the team’s
back-up automobile. That former Richard Childress Racing
entry is a new addition to the team’s fleet. The Whitesville,
Kentucky based team tested this Dodge Charger at Michigan
International Speedway in May. It has yet to see any ARCA
race competition.

Speedway Pre-Race Quotes: Patrick Sheltra, driver of the
No. 60 Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge Charger:
On Illinois State Fairgrounds (Springfield):
“The finish was exactly what this team needed. We
had a good car from the start of practice. We kept adjusting
on it and it was even faster for qualifying. We got hit
by a spinning car early in the race but we were able to
recover and work our way back up to the top-five. Everyone
around us and most of the top-10 had new tires, so I was
proud of what we accomplished by just taking a fuel only
stop.”
On Chicagoland Speedway: “Chicagoland
Speedway is a fast track. It’s similar to Kansas Speedway
and Kentucky Speedway but all of these mile-and-a-half tracks
stand out for each other in some way, shape or form. I’ve
always run well there, I just need a finish to show for
it.”
On The Open ARCA RE/MAX Series Test: “The
test was pretty decent. We worked a lot on the car and we
were able to make it a lot better. I appreciate Ted (Musgrave)
flying up for the test and assisting us. We weren’t
showing everything we had and the guys have made even more
changes back at the shop, so I’m looking forward to
seeing how it’s all going to lay out.”
On The Key To Winning At Chicagoland:
“Luck, horsepower and fuel mileage. If you have to
have luck at Chicagoland Speedway because you can find yourself
in trouble there quickly. Motor is important because it’s
a fast track. You need to be able to have the speed on the
frontstretch and backstretch to be able to setup your competition
for impending pass(es). Last but not least, you can never
count out fuel mileage at a place like this. Kentucky last
year we saw a bunch of teams run out of fuel and it very
well could happen here. We’ll just keep focused on
all that and maybe more and we should roll out with another
good finish.”
On The Points Gain: “Springfield
was a good race for us, especially point’s wise. We
did everything we needed to do and more. We know that our
chances of probably winning the championship are out the
window but there are still placements inside the top-five
that are up for grabs. We just need to keep busting off
performances like we did at Springfield and we should be
sitting comfortably in top-five come year’s end.”
Sheltra Motorsports, Chicagoland
Speedway Pre-Race Quotes: Grace Sheltra, owner of the No.
60 Buffalo Wings & Rings Dodge Charger:
On Illinois State Fairgrounds (Springfield):
“Springfield is exactly what we needed to put this
team back on the map. Patrick and the team were confident
about Springfield early last week and it showed on Sunday.
The guys just did a great job. I know that when they go
to DuQuoin in a couple weeks, they’ll be looking to
cap off the dirt races in victory lane.”
On Chicagoland: “It’s the
track of Patrick’s ARCA RE/MAX Series debut in 2005
so it has some sentimental value to us. He’s never
been able to get the finishes he deserves but it isn’t
from the lack of trying. We feel from what we learned from
the test last weekend and Patrick’s confidence roll
right now we should be in-store for another strong run on
Friday afternoon.”
On The Points Gain: “To shave off
120 points in one race between four competitors is huge.
It’s what we needed to put us back in the hunt for
finishing in the top-five. We knew that Springfield and
DuQuoin could be our biggest chances to gain some ground
and we took full advantage of that last Sunday. Chicagoland
is another opportunity, so we just need to use our head
and make sure we’re around for the end when it counts
the most.”
